Developing software is done through a system of increasingly complex interactions. Just as complex software will eventually become brittle, so too will complex work systems eventually become fragile and break. So how do you keep work systems as flexible as the software you are developing? You develop workers who accept the challenge to continuously improve their work system so that it delivers increasingly better customer outcomes. Nothing is going to get you very far if you do not grow the people who understand customers, decide what tests to run, write the code, keep up the cadence, deploy the software, provide support, and constantly improve the system so it delivers more value to customers.

What does this mean in practice? That is what Mary and Tom Poppendieck will discuss and demonstrate in this workshop. It will cover class process improvement tools and the lean thinking that is critical for making these tools successful.

Mary Poppendieck

Mary Poppendieck has been in the Information Technology industry for over thirty years. She has managed software development, supply chain management, manufacturing operations, and new product development. She spearheaded the implementation of a Just-in-Time system in a 3M video tape manufacturing plant and led new product development teams, commercializing products ranging from digital controllers to 3M Light Fiber™.

Mary is a popular writer and speaker, and coauthor of the book Lean Software Development, which was awarded the Software Development Productivity Award in 2004. A sequel, Implementing Lean Software Development, was published in 2006. A third book, Leading Lean Software Development, was published in November 2009.
